Manchester United are unlikely to sign PSV Eindhoven star Cody Gakpo ahead of the transfer deadline due to Antony's arrival at Old Trafford, according to Sky Sports reporter Dharmesh Sheth.

The Red Devils took their summer spending beyond the £200million mark thanks to agreeing an £81.3million deal for Ajax winger Antony yesterday.

What's the latest news involving Gakpo?

Gakpo has admitted that Manchester United have shown an interest in securing his services ahead of tomorrow's 11pm deadline.

The Red Devils reportedly headed to PSV with a £25million take-it-or-leave it bid last week, but the 23-year-old has remained with the Eredivisie giants.

But Manchester United are not the only Premier League club coveting Gakpo because it is understood that Southampton have failed with a £21million offer as his current employers are seeking £38million.

The attacker has reportedly been a key target for Saints this summer and Rasmus Ankersen, co-founder of the club’s ownership group Sport Republic, has led talks with their Dutch counterparts.

Everton and Leeds United have entered the race for Gakpo's signature as well, so there is a distinct possibility that he could find himself at the centre of a tug-of-war on deadline day.

What has Dharmesh Sheth said about Gakpo?

Sheth believes Manchester United may struggle to stump up the funds needed to lure Gakpo away from PSV after already spending big on Antony this week.

As a result, the Sky Sports reporter feels a move for the Dutchman has moved onto the backburner.

When asked whether a deal is now off the table, Sheth told GIVEMESPORT: "With Gakpo, it looks like it probably is. When they were going for Antony and Gakpo at the same time, I was told that it was unlikely they'd get both but not impossible.

"I can't see a situation now, given the amount of money they had to go to to get Antony to the club, where they'd have that budget to go in for someone like Gakpo as well. That looks like it's going to be taking a backseat."

Would Gakpo be a good signing for Manchester United?

Gakpo has already entered double figures for goal contributions in the early stages of the new campaign, so it is clear that he is a serious threat in the final third of the pitch.

With the 2022 World Cup in Qatar just around the corner, the seven-cap Netherlands international would be desperate to make an instant impact at Manchester United if he were to seal a move.

That means ten Hag would be acquiring a hungry star, while the fact Gakpo has found the back of the net 46 times over the course of his senior career shows he could take the Red Devils' attacking options to the next level.
