Manchester United will have ‘an opportunity’ to re-sign Barcelona forward Memphis Depay ‘until the last minute’ this summer, according to journalist Fabrizio Romano.

The 28-year-old has been deemed surplus to requirements at Camp Nou following the arrival of Robert Lewandowski and could move onto pastures new in the final hours of the transfer window.

What is the latest news involving Depay?

Romano previously revealed that Memphis’ proposed move to Juventus had collapsed despite an agreement being close between all the relevant parties.

Juve instead decided to focus their resources on bringing in Arkadiusz Milik and Leandro Parades, though, leaving the Netherlands international to continue his search for a fresh challenge.

And The Athletic’s David Ornstein has confirmed that United are ‘keeping tabs’ on Memphis ahead of a potential move for him.

The versatile star could be an appealing prospect to Erik ten Hag given that he would be available on a free transfer despite still having one year left to run on his current £230,000-per-week contract with Barca.

Romano has disclosed that the Catalan giants are eager to get his wages off their books, and therefore, are prepared to terminate his deal.

What has Romano said about Memphis?

Memphis was signed by United for £31 million back in July 2015 from PSV Eindhoven, yet he only scored seven times in 53 appearances and was sold to Lyon 18 months later.

But Romano has informed GiveMeSport that he is back on the Red Devils’ radar after reviving his career via an outstanding three-and-a-half-year spell in French football.

He said: “Memphis Depay could be an opportunity until the last minute because we know that Barcelona are prepared to let him go on a free transfer in case he will reach an agreement with another club.”

Would Memphis be a good signing?

Memphis made an instant impact after signing for Barcelona, scoring eight goals and providing two assists in his opening 15 La Liga games.

However, the departure of former manager and compatriot Ronald Koeman, combined with injury issues and the arrivals of Ferran Torres and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, saw him feature less prominently in the second half of the campaign.

Altogether, Memphis found the back of the net on 13 occasions in 2021/22, setting up two further strikes in 37 appearances across all competitions.

His ability to play on the left-wing and upfront would surely appeal to Ten Hag, and on a free transfer, Memphis may just be a risk worth taking for United at this stage of the summer.
