Liverpool beat Newcastle at Anfield on Wednesday in the most dramatic circumstances.

Eddie Howe's side had taken the lead when debutant Alexander Isak put them ahead in the 38th minute.

The away side thought they had doubled their lead when Isak appeared to score his second of the match. The Swede seemed to break Liverpool's offside trap, kept his cool to cut inside Joe Gomez and Virgil van Dijk before firing the ball past Alisson.

It was a sensational goal but the assistant referee put up his flag for offside to deny Newcastle and Isak's second.

Shortly afterwards, Liverpool were level through Roberto Firmino after Mohamed Salah's pullback.

Newcastle's time-wasting

With half an hour remaining, there only looked to be one winner.

And Newcastle knew it.

They had been keen to slow things down the entire match and they took it to new levels after Liverpool had equalised with multiple players often going down with injuries. It really angered the Liverpool crowd, players and coaching staff.

It led to referee Andre Marriner adding on five additional minutes at the end of the second half.

However, the majority of those five minutes were spent with Nick Pope down injured. It meant play continued well beyond those five minutes. And during that time added on in added on time, Liverpool forced an unlikely winner through Fabio Carvalho who stuck home from a scrambled corner.

It led to a clash between the two benches while bottles were seen to be thrown by the Newcastle staff.

The irony that Liverpool had scored in the 98th minute when Newcastle had time-wasted for most of the match wasn't lost on the players, fans or Jurgen Klopp.

In fact, even despite their victory, the whole of Anfield showed their displeasure long after full-time.

Newcastle players had gone over to the travelling away fans to applaud them for their incredible support. When they turned around to eventually leave the pitch, they probably expect most of Anfield to be empty.

But many of them had stayed behind to see Newcastle off the pitch by booing them, waving and sarcastically tapping their watches.

One fan in the replies summed it up by claiming he's been going to Liverpool games since 1978 and that's the first time he's ever booed a visiting side off the pitch.

After the game, Howe insisted Newcastle players were genuinely feeling the effects of their efforts rather than wasting time.

"You have to consider and take into account we had a day less preparation," the Newcastle boss said.

"Our players have emptied our tanks in every game. There was a bit of fatigue, a couple of players going down with cramp. I think that's to be expected given the physical effort the players have given today.

"There was no gamesmanship - it was just how the players were feeling at that moment."
