Is it right that Fabio Carvalho’s late winning goal for Liverpool against Newcastle on Wednesday was allowed to stand? The Reds snatched all three points with virtually the last kick of the game following a corner.Carvalho slammed Mohamed Salah’s headed pass into the back of the net from close range, prompting scenes of wild celebration from all those connected to Liverpool inside Anfield. However, Newcastle’s coaching staff, players and supporters were fuming that the full-time whistle hadn’t been blown far earlier.

What did Eddie Howe say after Liverpool 2-1 Newcastle?

“It seemed like the final whistle was never coming from our perspective,” Eddie Howe said after the match, per the Liverpool Echo.

"It's a cruel game, these things happen. Hugely frustrated with that last action. Someone else needs to tell me whether we should have still been playing - I don't know."

Indeed, 97:09 was the time on the clock when Carvalho scored.

Yet only five minutes of stoppage-time had been added.

Newcastle hero Alan Shearer tweeted: “5 mins injury time score in the 98th.”

Everton fan and boxer Tony Bellew responded by tweeting: “Didn’t you know they just play till LiVARpool get the winner at Anfield mate!”

You can certainly understand why Newcastle fans felt both baffled and angry by the late goal.

Why was more than five minutes stoppage-time played?

However, one Liverpool supporter then responded to Shearer and Bellew’s tweets with a fascinating video which may explain where the additional two minutes came from.

Newcastle have been accused by Liverpool fans of time-wasting during stoppage-time and the following video may strengthen their argument.

Watch it here:

Regardless of whether Newcastle goalkeeper Nick Pope was genuinely injured or not, referee Andre Marriner was within his rights to add more time on after the initial five minutes due to the stoppage.

Another tweet which has gone viral says it was ‘karma at its finest’ - although that would, of course, be harsh on Pope if he was hurt.

Eddie Howe: 'There was no gamesmanship'

"You have to consider and take into account we had a day less preparation,” Howe said in his post-match press conference. “Our players have emptied our tanks in every game. There was a bit of fatigue, a couple of players going down with cramp. I think that's to be expected given the physical effort the players have given today.

"There was no gamesmanship - it was just how the players were feeling at that moment.”

The result means Liverpool climb to fifth in the Premier League table, having secured eight points from their opening fixtures following a disappointing start to the 2022-23 campaign.

Newcastle, meanwhile, find themselves 11th in the table but Howe will be quietly pleased that his players displayed such fight at one of the toughest away grounds in world football.
