Newcastle United rate West Ham United right-back Harrison Ashby very highly and are continuing to chase his signature on deadline day, according to Sky Sports reporter Keith Downie.

Eddie Howe has overseen a steady summer of business in the North East but still has time to bolster his squad further ahead of the 11pm cut-off tonight.

What is the latest Newcastle transfer news?

According to MailOnline, the Magpies have spoken to the Hammers regarding a move for Ashby before the end of the transfer window.

The report states that Newcastle have targeted the 20-year-old after Emil Krafth suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury against Tranmere Rovers in the Carabao Cup.

West Ham activated a clause to extend Ashby’s contract at the London Stadium over the summer, according to The Athletic, but it means he now has just 12 months remaining on his deal.

However, according to journalist Alan Nixon, Leeds are also chasing a deal for Ashby as the clock ticks towards 11pm.

Meanwhile, it is understood that Newcastle have made a late move to sign Tottenham forward Lucas Moura with Aston Villa also targeting the talented Brazilian.

Martin Dubravka is set to join Manchester United on loan before the transfer window closes after an agreement was reached on the details of the deal.

What has Downie said on the chase for Ashby?

Downie understands that, while it may not be the most exciting signing to the fans, Newcastle rate Ashby very highly and see him as a star for the future.

However, the Sky Sports reporter adds that West Ham and David Moyes do not want to lose the youngster.

Downie told GIVEMESPORT: “Obviously, it's not the breaking news that Newcastle fans want to hear, but I think he's very highly rated by Newcastle and they see him as a future right back if they can get him. So that might not be one for today, it may be one for a couple years’ time. I've heard David Moyes speak about him before, glowingly. I also understand West Ham do not want to lose them.”

Who have Newcastle signed this summer?

Only four new faces have arrived at St James’ Park in the current transfer window.

It has been a surprisingly cautious period for the richest club in the world but they have still strengthened Eddie Howe’s options.

Nick Pope, Matt Targett, Sven Botman and new record-signing Alexander Isak have all arrived on Tyneside as Newcastle look to trouble the big six this season.
