Aston Villa’s deadline day recruit, Leander Dendoncker, decided to leave Wolverhampton Wanderers to prove a point with his new club, according to transfer insider Dean Jones.

Steven Gerrard oversaw a busy summer window at Villa Park and will now be hoping his latest signing can help turn their league fortunes around.

What happened on transfer deadline day?

Dendoncker’s arrival from Wolves was the biggest moment of the final day of business for Villa, sealing a £15 million switch from their Midlands rivals.

The club had previously seen a £10 million offer rejected for the Belgium international’s signature but did enough to seal a deal late in the window.

Villa were also able to fend off interest from Arsenal in midfielder Douglas Luiz, turning down a £25 million bid for the Brazilian.

Dendoncker was not the only player to make the move, however.

Southampton centre-back Jan Bednarek was signed on a season-long loan as cover for fellow summer signing Diego Carlos.

Carlos ruptured his Achilles tendon in a Premier League clash with Everton earlier this season and is set to be sidelined until the new year.

What has Jones said on the arrival of Dendoncker?

Jones understands that the midfielder decided to make the switch to Villa in order to prove a point to his former club.

The transfer insider adds that Dendoncker now feels he is at a club who have more potential too having fallen down the pecking order at Molineux.

Jones told GIVEMESPORT: “I’m told Dendoncker is excited about the prospect of establishing himself in the Villa team. At Wolves his path was totally blocked but he wants to go and prove a point now. He feels like he’s joining a club with more potential but he has to make it work.”

Will Dendoncker be a success at Villa?

Gerrard’s side have had a shocking start to the Premier League season and boast just three points after five matches, losing four of their clashes so far.

Dendoncker should at least go some way to adding some much-needed solidity to the side, with the 6ft 2in ace not easily beaten on the ball.

The 27-year-old has also racked up 124 Premier League appearances, scoring nine goals, and playing throughout the midfield and in the centre of defence.

He has also had plenty of success when it comes to silverware, lifting four titles during his time with Anderlecht, and such a winning attitude could be key in turning Villa’s fortunes around.
