UFC legend Georges St-Pierre has given his thoughts on Jon Jones fighting at heavyweight.

For the longest time now, fans and pundits alike have been arguing over who the greatest fighter of all-time is. There are a handful of contenders who pop up more so than others and more often than not, Jon Jones and Georges St-Pierre are situated towards the top of that list.

Both men have incredible legacies in the sport of mixed martial arts and while they’ve had their ups and downs, nobody can deny the impact they’ve been able to have.

GSP has been officially retired for a few years now but Jones has simply been out of action, constantly teasing a move from 205 pounds up to heavyweight.

It hasn’t quite come to fruition just yet but as rumours continue to float around regarding his comeback, the aforementioned St-Pierre used a Q&A at UFC Paris to answer a question regarding Jon competing in a new weight class and how he might fare.

“When I met Jon Jones the last time it was like a year ago, and he put on a lot of weight. He seems very comfortable at that weight. So, it led me to believe he’s going to come back as good as he was in the light heavyweight division, except with more mass, more muscle mass.

“As a fan, I want to see him as he was at light heavyweight and perhaps even better than he was. But, he’s got great challenges ahead.”

The long road

After two and a half years outside of the Octagon, Jon Jones is going to have to start from scratch.

The fact that he’s 35 years old won’t matter too much given how much longer heavyweights tend to last in MMA, but the top of the division is stacked enough to warrant some serious thinking about where he fits in.

The logical first step seems to be for him to battle Stipe Miocic, potentially on the UFC’s final pay-per-view card of the year in December. Then, if he gets his hand raised in that outing, he can start to think about challenging Francis Ngannou for the undisputed UFC heavyweight championship.
