Chicharito spurns chance to complete hat-trick and win game for LA Galaxy with horrendous penalty

Javier Hernandez – or Chicharito, as he’s often referred to – spurned the chance to complete his hat-trick and, more importantly, secure all three points for LA Galaxy by taking one of 2022’s worst penalties.

The 34-year-old, best known for his five-year spell with Manchester United between 2010-2015, had scored an emphatic spot-kick less than 10 minutes earlier when his team were awarded a dramatic late penalty by referee Ramy Touchan.

Chicharito had opened the scoring against Sporting KC with a cool finish in the fourth minute before second-half goals from Johnathon Russell and Felipe Hernandez put the visitors 2-1 up at the Dignity Health Sports Park.

The Mexican forward levelled the scores with an excellent penalty in the 88th minute and was then presented with a golden opportunity to win the game for his team when LA Galaxy were awarded a second spot-kick.

Chicharito went for the Panenka but got it horribly, horribly wrong.

Goalkeeper John Pulskamp couldn’t believe his luck as the ball landed perfectly into his hands.

Dear oh dear.

All the embarrassed Chicharito could do was apologise to the home crowd after that effort.

As he walked off the pitch moments later, he told LA Galaxy’s fans: “We had one clear chance to get the three points, we couldn’t… I take responsibility, I’m sorry.

“Two weeks ago the Panenka worked really well, now this time it didn’t work. I need to look forward, take responsibility and keep improving and working.”

What else did Chicharito say after his failed Panenka?

Per Major League Soccer’s official website, he later added: “It’s a mental game and I dared to take the shot, and the responsibility of not getting the two [extra] points falls on me. I accept it, one hundred percent.

“Unfortunately, I caused my team to drop two points. But I’m going to keep on working. There’s no other way and I have to accept my responsibility.

“He [Pulskamp] guessed right and that’s it.”
