Tottenham Hotspur manager Antonio Conte wanted to sign another right wing-back during the summer transfer window, according to Charlie Eccleshare of The Athletic.

Conte oversaw a busy few months of business at Hotspur Way but there may well still be some regrets from the Italian after the deadline passed.

Who did he want to sign this summer?

Spurs did strengthen in this area over the summer, with Djed Spence signing from Middlesbrough for £20 million.

The 22-year-old was an integral member of the Nottingham Forest side that won promotion to the Premier League last term, during a loan spell from the Riverside, contributing to eight goals in 46 appearances.

However, before the new season had even kicked off, Spence looked in for a tough time under his new manager, with Conte describing him as ‘an investment for the club’ and emphasising the deal was not his idea.

Spurs were strongly linked with a number of players in the dying hours of the transfer window as they looked for a player to bolster their options at right wing-back, with the likes of Yannick Carrasco and Dan James rumoured to be of interest.

Emerson Royal has started the campaign as Conte’s first choice while Matt Doherty continues to recover from injury.

What has Eccleshare said on the situation?

Eccleshare understands that Conte would have liked to have added a right wing-back in the same mould as Ivan Perisic on the left.

However, The Athletic journalist adds that, due to the arrival of Spence, such a deal was never likely to materialise.

Eccleshare told GIVEMESPORT: “That’s not an area they were going to strengthen, because they'd already brought in Spence. But I think, if it were up to Conte, if he could have had a Perisic equivalent on the right, someone who is a more plug-in and play option, I think he probably would have been up for that.”

Who did Tottenham sign this summer?

While Conte may not have been granted his wishes at right wing-back, it was still a successful transfer window for him on the whole.

In total, seven new faces were signed at Hotspur Way and over £100 million spent.

Richarlison arrived from Everton to add some much-needed depth to the front line while Perisic will also be expected to bring a threat down the left flank.

Yves Bissouma was brought in from Brighton to add steel to the midfield while Clement Lenglet moved to shore up the defence for the campaign.

Left-back Destiny Udogie also signed but was sent back to Udinese on loan for the remainder of the 2022-23 season, while Hugo Lloris has fresh competition in the form of free agent Fraser Forster.
