Leeds winger Jack Harrison has been watched by England manager Gareth Southgate on a couple of occasions in the past, according to Sky Sports reporter Tim Thornton.

The ex-Manchester City youngster has made a fine start to the season and Thornton doesn't think the £60,000 per-week star is miles away from receiving his first call up.

What's the latest news involving Harrison?

Harrison has performed well in the Premier League since Leeds' promotion in 2020 but has taken his game to new levels in 2022-2023, with YouTuber Conor McGilligan describing him as 'superb'.

In the previous two campaigns, he has registered 16 and nine goal contributions to help the Elland Road club retain their status at this level.

But the attacker is already on course to top those statistics having scored once and assisted three goals in his opening six appearances.

Harrison's bright start has died down in recent weeks, but he showed his true quality with a standout display in the Chelsea over Leeds last month, where he was involved in two of the three goals.

His red-hot form comes less than three months before the mid-season World Cup, with his only involvement on the international stage to date coming for the Under-21s back in 2017.

But Thornton reckons that he came close to being named in previous squads and would fit nicely into Southgate's current party.

What did Thornton say about Harrison?

He told GIVEMESPORT: "I know Southgate has watched him quite a few times and I don't think he's been too far away from getting into England squads in the past.

"He fits the bill in terms of his energy levels and his stats are really good, he creates a lot of chances for his teammates, and he scores as well."

Could Harrison go to the World Cup?

If Harrison continues performing at his current level, there's no reason why he won't be rewarded with a call up for the Nations League games with Italy and Germany later this month.

But with the wide department one of the most competitive in Southgate's squad, it would be very optimistic to suggest that he could go to Qatar.

Not only is Harrison uncapped, but the likes of Jack Grealish, Phil Foden, Bukayo Saka, Raheem Sterling and Jarrod Bowen are already ahead of him in the pecking order, while Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho, who have started the campaign well, have missed out on the last couple of squads.

That type of strength in depth highlights what Harrison is up against if he wants to make the grade at international level.
