Manchester United could find Ivan Toney back on their radar ‘again soon’ following his outstanding start to the season, according to journalist Dean Jones.

The Brentford striker has been in fantastic form in the opening weeks of the current campaign, potentially catching the eye of some of the Premier League’s top clubs.

What is the latest news involving Toney?

Last month, The Mirror reported that United had joined Everton and Chelsea in the pursuit of Toney as they looked to strengthen their attacking options.

The trio were reportedly eyeing up moves for the 26-year-old after losing Edinson Cavani, Richarlison and Romelu Lukaku, respectively, although a formal offer never materialised.

Toney made the move to Brentford from Peterborough United for £10 million back in 2020 but Jones has previously told The Football Terrace that it would cost £50m for any potential suitor to prise him away from west London.

And that figure may have increased even further thanks to his recent exploits for the Bees, with his five strikes and two assists coming in his opening six league games of the season.

As per FBref, Toney has also ranked in the 95th percentile for clearances, 90th for interceptions, 87th for aerial duels won, and 85th for progressive passes amongst his positional peers over the last year.

What has Jones said about Toney?

Toney has helped fire Brentford into the top half of the table in the early stages of 2022/23, and as a result, he could be closing in on a move to one of the division's big hitters.

When asked if the 5 foot 10 ace will be on the radar of ‘top six’ clubs, Jones informed GiveMeSport that he believes that ‘half’ of those sides will be keeping a close eye on him.

He said: “I think that half the top six will, for sure. I’m not sure that those top two will at the moment, but certainly Chelsea still have half an eye on him, and United will do again soon in January if he keeps this up.”

Do Man Utd need Toney?

United lost Cavani on a free transfer over the summer, while Cristiano Ronaldo made it clear he wanted to depart in search of Champions League football.

Ronaldo ended up staying put in the red half of Manchester, but with fewer than 12 months remaining on his current contract, Erik ten Hag is likely to be searching for his successor next summer.

So far, Toney has managed to record a very respectable tally of 17 Premier League goals and seven assists in 41 outings for Brentford.

Those figures would surely increase if he was put into a more dominant side such as United, and Ten Hag may be tempted to hand Toney an opportunity to shine at the Theatre of Dreams.
