Premier League clubs really did make merry in the recently concluded summer transfer window as they splashed the cash on countless new recruits.

In total, an astonishing £1.9 billion was spent by clubs in the English top flight - more than La Liga, Serie A and the Bundesliga combined.

With the likes of Manchester City, Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester United all landing blockbuster deals to smash transfer records left, right and centre, the total transfer bill was always going to be eye-watering.

Couple that with the likes of Nottingham Forest signing a small army of footballers and you begin to understand why the Premier League outstripped its rivals by such a gaping distance.

But who got the best and the worst of the summer deals? Well, thanks to some very handy work from the Online Betting Guide and Transfermarkt, we can answer that very question.

Using Transfermarkt's valuations of the various stars that were snapped up, they were able to work out who overpaid and who underpaid the most during their summer business.

How much each Premier League club over and underpaid during the transfer window

Rather alarmingly, the extensive data revealed that just three clubs managed to get true value for their money as only Manchester City, Aston Villa and Fulham were calculated to have underpaid.

Conversely, fans of the likes of Manchester United, Chelsea, Newcastle, Everton and West Ham might want to look away as they were found to have overpaid for their gaggle of new stars by a substantial amount.

You can see the full figures, complete with each club's most expensive signing, in the graphic below:

Well, well, well... Manchester United might be on an upward curve, but they've certainly had to pay for that priviledge.

The Old Trafford giants overpaid by near £54 million for Antony with Ajax also the beneficiaries of a fee found to be £26 million over true market value for Lisandro Martinez.

Brazilian star Casemiro also cost the Red Devils £34 million more than his valuation on TransferMarkt.

Chelsea's deals for Wesley Fofana and Marc Cucurella sees them sit comfortably in second spot while West Ham, Newcastle and Southampton make up the top five.

City, meanwhile, having exploited Erling Haaland's minuscule release clause, were found to have underpaid by a staggering £90.5 million for the flurry of transfers.
