Marcelo: Real Madrid icon given incredible welcome by Olympiacos fans

On Monday evening, Real Madrid legend Marcelo was officially unveiled as an Olympiacos player after agreeing a one-year deal with the club on deadline day.

The Brazilian defender chose to leave Spain at the end of his contract, bringing an end to a trophy-laden 15 year spell at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Marcelo is comfortably one of Real Madrid’s greatest ever players. He won five Champions Leagues and six La Liga titles with the club, as well as recording some hugely impressive individual stats.

In 546 matches across all competitions with Los Blancos, the 34-year-old scored 38 goals and assisted 103 more, which are insane numbers for a left-back.

Yeah, Marcelo is a bona fide footballing legend and that’s why he received such an incredible welcome from the Olympiacos faithful on Monday night.

Around 20,000 supporters of the Greek side turned up at the Georgios Karaiskakis Stadium in the port of Piraeus to get a glimpse of their new signing.

And to say they gave him a hero’s welcome would be something of an understatement.

The scenes in the stands were absolutely incredible, with flares lit and chants loudly sung as Marcelo entered the field wearing the same No. 12 jersey he donned at Real Madrid.

Amazing, absolutely amazing.

Marcelo will be desperate to get to work at Olympiacos after having to make do with a place on the bench at Real Madrid in recent times due to the presence of Ferland Mendy.

He had to leave Los Blancos for the sake of his career, although that didn’t stop him from bidding farewell in very emotional fashion after winning his fifth Champions League.

“I walk out of here with my head held high. My family is very proud of me,” Marcelo said in tears at a ceremony held by Real Madrid to celebrate his career.

“I feel very fortunate, everything I have had in my life has been with work, but I have been lucky with the people I have had by my side. Thank you very much to you all.

“This is not a goodbye; I do not feel that I am leaving Real Madrid. The club’s future is secure with promising young talent, and in that I include my son, who is playing well in the academy. I arrived as a child, and I leave as a man.”
