Wolverhampton Wanderers are at risk of being dragged into a relegation battle as Sasa Kalajdzic is set for a lengthy spell on the Molineux sidelines, according to journalist Dean Jones.

The West Midlands side notched their first win since April when they overcame Southampton at the weekend, but they have suffered a major setback.

What's the latest news involving Kalajdzic?

Wolves have confirmed that, having been substituted after feeling pain in his knee during the victory over Southampton, scans have shown Kalajdzic has suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury.

It comes after head coach Bruno Lage threw the striker straight into his starting line-up, with Raul Jimenez also being unavailable.

Following the 15-cap Austria international’s debut setback, he is now set for an extensive spell on the sidelines.

Kalajdzic only made the £15.5million switch to Molineux from German outfit Stuttgart a matter of days earlier as the transfer deadline neared.

Technical director Scott Sellars described the 25-year-old as a ‘talented young striker’ who has ‘many excellent attributes’ following his arrival, but Wolves fans are now facing a significant wait before seeing Kalajdzic back on the pitch.

What has Dean Jones said about Kalajdzic?

Jones fears that Wolves could be dragged into the Premier League's relegation zone following Kalajdzic's injury.

The journalist believes the West Midlands side's hierarchy and Lage will be in despair about the 6 ft 7 star's lay-off.

Jones told GIVEMESPORT: "Wolves will probably be in the bottom three soon. Their next games are against Liverpool and then Manchester City.

"From a club point of view, to sign a striker of his type and quality but lose him immediately, that takes some getting over. They will be sitting there with their head in their hands at the moment."

Is Kalajdzic's injury a huge blow for Wolves?

Only Norwich City, Watford and Burnley - who were relegated - scored fewer goals than Wolves in the Premier League last season, so it was abundantly clear that Lage had to add more firepower to his squad.

Kalajdzic is certainly up to the task as he has found the back of the net 36 times during the early stages of his club career, so being unable to call upon him will be a frustration and concern for his new employers.

He had already notched three goal contributions in as many Bundesliga outings while still on Stuttgart's books at the start of the campaign, which emphasises that Wolves had brought in a frontman who was in fine form, but Lage will have to come up with a new solution from within his squad now the transfer window has closed.
