Chelsea revisiting a move for Ajax's Edson Alvarez could depend on how they fare in the next couple of months, says transfer insider Dean Jones.

The west London club tried to sign the 24-year-old midfielder on deadline day, but Jones is unsure if they will make another swoop for him in January.

What is the latest news involving Alvarez?

According to the Evening Standard, Alvarez is Chelsea's preferred midfield target if they decide to strengthen that area of the pitch in the new year.

The above comes after they made a £40m bid for the Mexican at the end of the last transfer window.

Understandably, with it being so late, Ajax did not entertain the offer, resulting in Chelsea quickly turning their attention to Juventus' Denis Zakaria, who they have since brought in on loan.

However, despite having the option to buy the former Borussia Monchengladbach man at the end of his loan, it appears that they are still keen on Alvarez.

What has Jones said about Alvarez to Chelsea?

Jones has told GIVEMESPORT that Chelsea have actually done a lot of thinking when it comes to Alvarez despite launching a bid for him in the 11th hour. The journalist, though, is not sure if they will return for his services in the winter window.

Speaking to GMS, he said: "Edson Alvarez was on their mind for a lot of the time, so we'll have to wait and see how Chelsea fare in the next couple of months."

Should Chelsea sign Alvarez in January?

Chelsea definitely need to sign a midfielder, even if Zakaria is a success and they end up buying the Switzerland international.

Jorginho and N'Golo Kante are both out of contract next summer, while the latter became a player Thomas Tuchel could not even rely on before his sacking due to his constant injury problems.

It would now not be a surprise if both players departed the club at the end of the season, with journalist Simon Phillips reporting that Jorginho is unlikely to put pen to paper on a new deal.

When you consider all of that, signing another midfielder as soon as possible makes sense, and Alvarez, who has been described as "charismatic", could be a very good option.

As per FBref, the Mexico international has ranked in the 96th percentile for clearances and the 94th for aerials won among his positional peers over the last year, which is more than impressive.
