UFC 279 will be taking place on Saturday 10th September from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The date of this contest comes at an interesting point in both men's careers, as Diaz enters the octagon for potentially the final ever time.

Diaz has not fought for the UFC since July 2021, where he faced now-UFC Welterweight Champion Leon Edwards. Diaz would lose that contest via decision over 5 rounds, and the date of that last bout is just over a year from his return, meaning there may well be some ring rust for the MMA legend.

Chimaev however has actually fought on two occasions since Diaz was last in the octagon. 'Borz' would defeat Li Jingliang in October 2021 and Gilbert Burns in April 2022.

With Chimaev having such a meteoric rise up the 170-pound division of the company and Diaz coming towards the end of his career, it certainly does not help that Chimaev has more cage time in more recent dates than the former for of Conor McGregor.

UFC President Dana White discussed Diaz’s contributions to the promotion ahead of what is likely his final ever octagon appearance this Saturday.

Speaking at a DWCS 53 post-fight news conference this Tuesday (via MMAJunkie), he said: “Nate and I talked and I said, ‘Listen.’ This kid came in on ‘The Ultimate Fighter.’ He’s fought incredible wars for us. He’s been a big part of this company for a very long time. What more could I ask of Nate Diaz? If Nate is ready to make this his last fight, I wish him all the best in the world. It’s been fun. It’s really been fun dealing with those two.

“At times, at certain times, it was whatever, but looking back, the Diaz Brothers have been an absolute blast. They’re legends in this sport. They’re legends in this company. These days come with all the guys. If that’s what Nate wants, then, yeah, we wish him the best.”
