Everton star Nathan Patterson needs to ensure this is his 'breakthrough season' at Goodison Park as he 'clearly has huge potential', according to journalist Paul Brown.

The Toffees are still searching for the first win of the Premier League season, but the right-back's performances have caught the eye.

What's the latest news involving Patterson?

Patterson made the £16million switch to Everton from Scottish giants Rangers in January, but the early stages of his Toffees career did not go to plan.

He was made to contend with a change in the dugout just weeks after his arrival as Frank Lampard was appointed as the Merseyside outfit's manager following Rafa Benitez's sacking.

Patterson struggled to convince Lampard that he should be his first choice right-back as, following his move, he was only offered 45 minutes of action last season.

But the 20-year-old, who penned a five-and-a-half year deal when he made the move south of the border, has had more joy in the 2022/23 campaign.

Patterson has made seven appearances and failed to miss a single minute of Premier League action this term.

What has Paul Brown said about Patterson?

Brown believes Patterson is under pressure to ensure he makes an impact at Everton this season.

The journalist feels the Scotsman's performance in last weekend's goalless draw with Liverpool showed he is capable of being a huge success at Goodison Park.

Brown told GIVEMESPORT: "I think it needs to be his breakthrough season. He didn't play much after he came in last time around for various reasons.

"He clearly has huge potential. I think he's going to be, at his age, a little bit inconsistent.

"He's had one stinker already this season but, in the derby, he was absolutely tremendous. It was a really phenomenal performance and he was one of the best players on the pitch."

Has Patterson been gaining plaudits this season?

Lampard has been impressed with how Patterson has made the right-back position his own during the early stages of the campaign and claimed 'his defensive game has been excellent'.

The 10-cap Scotland international has been catching the eye of those outside of Everton as well, which emphasises that his career is heading in the right direction and improvements have been made to his game.

Speaking on Match of the Day, via Football Scotland, pundit Danny Murphy described Patterson as a 'diamond' and 'terrific young player' after last Saturday's Merseyside derby draw against Liverpool.
