Everton manager Frank Lampard would be able to 'dominate teams' by picking a midfield trio of Idrissa Gueye, Amadou Onana and Abdoulaye Doucoure at Goodison Park, according to journalist Paul Brown.

The Toffees have endured a slow start to the 2022-23 Premier League season and, following their brush with relegation, they will be desperate to start picking up more points soon.

How are Everton getting on?

With six Premier League games played, Everton are one of just two sides to have not won a game, alongside rock-bottom Leicester City.

Lampard has, at least, led his side to four draws this season and is currently keeping them out of relegation trouble on goal difference.

But with two of those draws coming in winnable games against Leeds United and Nottingham Forest, there is still some understandable concern present.

Supporters will have been encouraged by their team’s display during the Merseyside Derby on Saturday afternoon, however, taking a point from local rivals Liverpool in a 0-0 draw.

The clash saw Lampard choose a midfield trio of Tom Davies, £33m man Onana and Alex Iwobi, although £2m ace Gueye came off the bench just after the hour mark.

Doucoure has made two appearances so far this season but has missed Everton’s last four matches after suffering a hamstring injury against Aston Villa.

What has Brown said on Everton’s midfield?

Brown believes that once the Mali international returns from injury, Lampard may well have the perfect midfield at his disposal.

He says that £25m star Doucoure and Onana playing either side of Gueye would bring a perfect balance to the Toffees moving forward.

Brown told GIVEMESPORT: “I think if you started with Gueye and with two runners, like Doucoure and Onana, who can get forward but also do some of the donkey work, I think that would be a really powerful midfield that is capable of dominating a lot of teams.”

Could the trio be a success?

It will certainly be interesting to see how the three players blend should Lampard choose to deploy them as a unit.

On paper, it could work brilliantly. Gueye has plenty of experience, with the 32-year-old racking up 135 Premier League appearances, while Doucoure has also shown he can cut it in the top-flight, scoring 21 goals in the competition.

Onana is a raw talent with a lot of potential and playing alongside two experienced professionals could well give him the best shot of progressing.
