Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe may soon consider playing a strike partnership of Alexander Isak and Callum Wilson at St James’ Park, according to journalist Pete O’Rourke.

The Magpies smashed their transfer record to bring Isak to the club from Real Sociedad in the summer, paying £63 million for his services, and he may yet form a lethal partnership with his new teammate.

How have Isak and Wilson performed for Newcastle?

The Sweden international made his debut for the club against Liverpool at Anfield earlier this season, and his presence was immediately felt, scoring the opening goal in a controversial 2-1 defeat.

He retained his spot in the starting XI for last weekend’s match up with Crystal Palace in the North East and, although he failed to find the back of the net, he did have two shots on target in the 0-0 draw.

Wilson, on the other hand, is into his third season with Newcastle following his move from Bournemouth in the summer of 2020 for £20 million.

For much of that time, he has been the club’s primary striking threat, scoring 22 goals in 49 games, including two in the Premier League this term.

However, he has already missed 39 games with injury since his transfer and is currently working his way back from a hamstring problem.

What has O’Rourke said on a potential partnership?

O’Rourke says that Howe will definitely have considered playing the duo in a strike partnership in the future.

He adds, however, that it would likely depend on who the club were facing as to whether or not he deployed both stars.

O’Rourke told GIVEMESPORT: “I’m sure it's something that Eddie Howe would consider, playing two up front. I'm sure it will all depend on the formation of the opposition whether he plays the two attackers up front but Eddie Howe traditionally has been somebody who does like to play two forwards up front as well.”

Would the duo work as a pairing?

Between them, Wilson and Isak have bagged a remarkable 195 career goals, so there is obvious potential for it to be a success.

It is not without its risks, however. Since moving to Newcastle two years ago, Wilson has nearly always been deployed as a lone striker.

While Isak has on occasion been used in a front two at Sociedad, partnering Takefusa Kubo at the start of the 2022-23 campaign, he too is more used to being used as a focal point.

But if Howe can get them working together as a duo, it could be something special.
