Leeds United will continue to monitor PSV Eindhoven winger Cody Gakpo ahead of January, says journalist Pete O'Rourke.

The Yorkshire club were said to have been keen on signing the 23-year-old during the summer transfer window, but they were unable to land him in the end.

Who was interested in Gakpo?

Many teams, including Leeds. As per The Athletic, director of football Victor Orta travelled to the Netherlands in his bid to buy the player.

However, according to the same outlet, PSV decided against selling Gakpo despite initially having an asking price for him.

A report from The Telegraph claims they wanted a fee of around £38m for the Dutchman after rejecting a £21.4m offer from Southampton.

As well as Leeds and Southampton, Manchester United were also thought to have had an interest in Gakpo, but they opted to sign Antony after they were finally able to agree an £80m-plus deal with Ajax.

What has O'Rourke said about Gakpo and Leeds?

O'Rourke does not think Leeds have given up on Gakpo and believes they will continue to watch him ahead of the winter transfer window.

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, the journalist said: "Leeds thought there was a real chance that they might get this deal done before the deadline with Victor Orta travelling to Holland to try and get it done, so it was a blow not to get him in the end.

"I think Leeds will continue to look at Gakpo ahead of the January transfer window, as will a number of European clubs."

Why do Leeds and other clubs want Gakpo?

Gakpo is a wide man with a lot of potential. Last season, the Netherlands international scored 12 goals and provided 13 assists in the Eredivisie, which is extremely impressive.

Whether those numbers would translate to the Premier League remains to be seen, but it is clear to see that Gakpo is a really talented individual.

As per WhoScored, Gakpo also completed 2.9 dribbles and 2.6 key passes per game during the 2021/22 Eredivisie season. No player in PSV's squad was able to top either average, showing how good he has been for the Dutch side and what he could bring to Elland Road.

Unfortunately for Leeds, though, it looks like they will face a lot of competition for Gakpo's signature if they decide to go back in for him in January. Jesse Marsch, then, could have some convincing to do if the PSV star is to end up at his club.
