Wolverhampton Wanderers fans should view the signing of former Chelsea star Diego Costa as a ‘moment to embrace’ if they can get a deal over the line at Molineux, according to transfer insider Dean Jones.

Bruno Lage is currently short of striking options and has now turned to the 33-year-old free agent in his hour of need in the West Midlands.

What is the latest on Costa?

The Athletic reported earlier this week that Costa was set for a medical with Wolves after he left Atletico Mineiro back in January, leaving him available to sign outside of the transfer window.

However, a problem emerged when it was reported that the former Spain international did not possess enough points to obtain a UK work permit, leaving Wanderers even considering a move for Andy Carroll.

But after an appeal from the club, Costa was granted the necessary paperwork and underwent his medical on Thursday afternoon, with a one-year deal available to him.

Once confirmed, Costa will become Wolves’ fifth new signing since the end of last season, following Matheus Nunes, Goncalo Guedes, Nathan Collins, Sasa Kalajdzic and Boubacar Traore through the door.

What has Jones said on the deal?

Jones says that, given their current run of form, Wolves are lucky to not be in deeper relegation trouble after six matches.

However, the journalist adds that signing someone of Costa’s stature is a moment to be embraced by the club and its fans.

Jones told GIVEMESPORT: “Wolves are lucky, right now, to be outside of the drop zone. But I think the fans should welcome him if they genuinely do manage to get Diego Costa. I think it's a moment you should embrace.”

Why are Wolves looking to sign him?

Kalajdzic signed from Stuttgart ahead of deadline day to bolster Lage’s options in attack, but the 6ft 7in marksman suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury on his debut against Southampton.

The club confirmed the news in a statement, adding that Raul Jimenez had also pulled up with a groin problem in the warmup on Sunday.

Having loaned Fabio Silva to Anderlecht earlier in the summer, Wolves have been left without a senior striker available for selection.

Costa is certainly a short-term fix at Molineux but given he has scored 52 goals in 89 Premier League games, it could be exactly what the club needs too.

He has also claimed plenty of silverware in his career, indicating that he could bring a much-needed winning attitude to the club.
