Leon Edwards has given his thoughts on Kamaru Usman’s reaction to the knockout heard around the world at UFC 278.

Last month at UFC 278 in Utah, Leon Edwards managed to pull off one of the biggest comebacks in UFC history when he knocked Kamaru Usman out cold to become the new UFC welterweight champion.

In doing so, he was able to put an end to Usman’s three-year reign as king of the division - something many pundits and fans hadn’t seen coming.

Everyone knew ‘Rocky’ was good enough to cause Kamaru problems, but the manner in which he was able to get the job done really did send a message to every fighter out there that it’s not over until it’s over.

One thing that a lot of people had noted during the aftermath of the shocking result was how Usman handled himself. ‘The Nigerian Nightmare’ was humble, appreciative of the opportunity, and even said that he was relieved to have the pressure of being champion off of his shoulders.

In a recent interview, Edwards gave his own take on how Usman has been acting.

“It’s weird, to go from this cocky guy to ‘I’m happy to get knocked out’ and ‘it’s a relief’, I just don’t believe it. I hope I never get to a stage where I’m happy for a loss.

“It’s weird, I don’t know. The way he’s handled it is the only way he could handle it, right? He couldn’t come out and be salty. I think he’s handling it the only way he could, but we’ll see, I don’t know.”

“It is weird the way he’s going along with it, I feel like he’s overdoing it. It is what it is. He was the champion, he thought he couldn’t be beat, he’s been beat, that’s just the game. The game is the game and that’s it.”

The trilogy

Regardless of whether or not Khamzat Chimaev beats Nate Diaz this weekend, it feels inevitable that the next fight Edwards will take part in will be a trilogy against Usman - probably in England.

In addition to it potentially being hosted in a stadium, Leon has acknowledged just how huge their third showdown could be.

Either way, nobody can take this moment away from him as he continues through this incredible victory lap after the biggest win of his career.
