Crystal Palace are in a good position to sign Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher if he becomes available in future windows, having failed to bring him back to Selhurst Park in the summer, according to Tom Barclay of The Sun.

Patrick Vieira oversaw a busy few months of business in south London but ultimately failed in one of the primary transfer objectives.

What is the latest on Gallagher?

According to The Times, they submitted a £27 million bid for the 22-year-old late in the transfer window but it ultimately failed.

It was understood that Palace had hoped the prospect of regular football in the build-up to the World Cup would be enough to tempt him back to the club.

Newcastle United were also interested, with The Sun reporting that the midfielder became their top priority, with Chelsea slapping a £40 million price tag on his head.

David Moyes wanted to bring Gallagher to the London Stadium, however, as the Scot looked to add more energy to his West Ham side.

But he remained at Chelsea beyond the deadline and has endured an eventful start to the season.

Gallagher has started three of the club’s last four games, missing the 2-1 defeat to Southampton after picking up a red card against Leicester City.

What has Barclay said on his future?

Barclay understands that, if Gallagher were to become available, Palace would stand a good chance of winning the race for his signature.

The journalist adds that the player’s past experience with the club is bound to give them an edge over their rivals for his signature.

Barclay told GIVEMESPORT: “Crystal Palace would definitely have been in for him. They were hoping that he might become available on loan towards the end of the window. The fact that he did so well under Patrick Vieira would definitely put them in a good position to get him.”

Would Gallagher be a good signing for Palace?

It was no surprise to see Palace pushing for the four-cap England international in the summer.

Last season saw Gallagher enjoy a breakthrough season in the top-flight, scoring eight Premier League goals and providing three assists in 34 games.

The player himself may well feel he would be better off in an environment like Palace where he is likely to be a more valued player.

At Stamford Bridge, he is currently competing with N’Golo Kante, Mateo Kovacic, Jorginho and Ruben Loftus-Cheek for places and is only set to get game time when someone suffers an injury.
