KofiMania was one of the best wrestling storylines of the 21st century, with Kingston beating Bryan to become WWE Champion for the first time in his career.
Many fans thought that Kofi would never be viewed as a main eventer, and while his time at the top was only brief, fans very much enjoyed seeing the New Day star win the title at the biggest show of the year.
What was WWE’s original plan for WrestleMania 35?
The original plan for WrestleMania 35 would have been Mustafa Ali face, and probably beat, Daniel Bryan for the WWE Championship.
However, that match didn’t end up happening, with Ali sustaining an injury in the build-up to the show that meant WWE had to change direction.
Ultimately, the decision was made to go with Kofi Kingston for the big moment, after he won over the hearts of fans with an impressive showing at Elimination Chamber just a few weeks prior.
Big E was nearly picked instead of Kofi Kingston?
So WWE went with Kofi Kingston, as we’ve covered, but a member of the WWE management team has revealed that Big E was originally pitched for the spot.
Road Dogg, who was rehired by WWE last month in an Executive position, has revealed that he originally pitched for Big E to beat Daniel Bryan at WrestleMania in April 2019.
Speaking on the Wrestling Outlaws podcast, Road Dogg explained that he made the suggestion that Big E should be given the title, seeing him as a more believable threat because of his size, via WrestleTalk.
Truth be told, I pitched Big E being ‘the guy’ just because I love Big E, his character — he’s a big guy so he’s a believable character.
It would take Big E two more years before he became WWE Champion, cashing-in his Money in the Bank to win the World title from Bobby Lashley in August 2021.
Unfortunately, Big E is out dealing with a broken neck right now, and due to the incredibly serious nature of the injury, it remains unclear when we can expect to see him back in the ring.
Big E has been able to avoid surgery, but he’s revealed that his recovery wasn’t progressing as quickly as he’d have hoped, which is definitely unfortunate news.
