Rangers striker Alfredo Morelos will be ‘fired up’ to improve his side’s fortunes and re-establish himself as a ‘key figure’, according to journalist Dean Jones.

The 26-year-old has been a peripheral figure in the opening weeks of the season but could be recalled by manager Giovanni van Bronckhorst following the Gers’ recent struggles.

What is the latest news involving Morelos?

Morelos was a surprise omission from Rangers’ matchday squad when they travelled to Eindhoven to take on PSV in the second-leg of their Champions League play-off last month.

Van Bronckhorst questioned the Colombia international’s fitness levels and attitudes prior to their crucial encounter but insisted that he ‘still has a future’ at the club in the aftermath of their victory.

"I sat down with him before we went to Eindhoven and I said before in a press conference that Alfredo, if he wants to come back, needs to do things differently, and that is what he is doing at the moment,” said the 47-year-old tactician.

"For me, it is the case of sitting with him in the next days and talk to him about his future. But he still has a future with us, he is still a Rangers player.”

Morelos has only played 30 minutes since that memorable night at the Philips Stadion yet could be relied upon to provide an additional attacking threat when Napoli visit Ibrox.

What has Jones said about Morelos?

Jones believes reintroducing Morelos is ‘worth a go’ for Van Bronckhorst, who will ‘expect a reaction’ from the South American should he be granted an opportunity to impress.

He told GiveMeSport: “It’s worth a go, I think Morelos will be fired up to get this team going again and will have a determination to show he can be a key figure as they move forward.

“I think Van Bronckhorst will pilot carefully when he throws him in, but when he does, he will expect a reaction.”

How important is Morelos to Rangers?

Summer signing Antonio Colak has made an outstanding start to his Rangers career, bagging seven goals and providing one assist in his opening 11 games.

However, Morelos, who earns £33,000-per-week, has also proven himself for the Glasgow giants, registering 164 goal contributions in 229 appearances in all competitions since arriving from Helsinki back in 2017.

And with Napoli currently sitting at the top of the Serie A standings and their Champions League group, Rangers may well need Morelos’ input to get anything out of the game.
