Coolest penalty ever? Marc Guehi for Chelsea in UEFA Youth League

Marc Guehi has developed into one of the best centre-backs in England since signing for Crystal Palace.

Following an impressive loan spell at Championship side Swansea City in 2020/21, the 22-year-old moved to Selhurst Park from parent club Chelsea in a deal worth around £18 million.

Guehi signed a five-year deal with Patrick Vieira’s side and he’s certainly been worth every single penny of his transfer fee thus far.

The Ivory Coast-born defender was exceptional throughout the course of the 2021/22 campaign and even earned himself a first call-up to the England national team back in March.

Yeah, Guehi’s career is certainly on the right track and in the years to come, Chelsea may actually regret selling the 2017 FIFA U-17 World Cup winner for a relatively bargain price – especially when his fee is compared to the £70 million the west London club forked out for Wesley Fofana.

Guehi was never really given much of a chance in the Blues’ first-team. He was restricted to just two appearances at senior level after excelling in the club’s youth setup.

And his brilliance in the lower ranks of the Chelsea system certainly wasn’t just about his defensive capabilities either.

Back in April of 2019, Guehi wowed football fans around the world when he successfully took a ‘zero-step penalty’ in a UEFA Youth League shootout versus Dinamo Zagreb.

Yes, that’s right, the defender didn’t take a run-up before firing the ball past the opposition’s goalkeeper in an incredible display of footballing bravery.

To say it was audacious would be the understatement of all understatements and you can relive the snippet of ingenuity from Guehi below.

“Have you seen anything like this at any level?!” the BT Sport commentator said and over three years later, we’re still yet to see Guehi’s technique replicated by another penalty taker.

If Palace are involved in a shootout this season and the centre-back is still on the pitch, it will be interesting to see whether he performs his unique routine from 12 yards once again.

Thanks to Guehi’s marvellous penalty, Chelsea beat Dinamo Zagreb 4-2 in the shootout to progress to the semi-finals of the 2018/19 UEFA Youth League, where they defeated Barcelona over two legs.

But the Blues were eventually defeated in the final itself by FC Porto. The Portuguese side secured victory by a 3-1 scoreline at the Colovray Stadium in Nyon, with Arsenal‘s summer signing Fabio Vieira one of the goal-getters on the night.
