The Dallas Cowboys could turn to Cam Newton as they look to find a replacement for Dak Prescott following his injury on Sunday night, Peter Schrager has claimed.
Franchise quarterback Dak Prescott suffered an injury to his thumb late in the 4th quarter, which was just the icing on the cake of what was a terrible night for the Dallas Cowboys as they lost at home to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers without scoring a single touchdown, the only team in the NFL to do so in Week 1.
The initial consensus surrounding Prescott’s injury appears to be positive, with reports emerging that he will only be out for between 4-6 weeks, with Cowboys owner Jerry Jones adding to the positive vibes by stating that he believes that Prescott will be back on the earlier end of that timeframe.
But whilst the outlook might be positive, the Cowboys are still without a starting calibre quarterback for the next couple of weeks, and discussion has begun about whether or not they should bring someone in from outside the franchise, or if they should continue with what they have.
At the moment, the only choices are backup quarterback Cooper Rush and current practice squad member Will Grier, who combined have thrown a total of 115 passes in the NFL for a combined 716 yards (via Stathead.com), not exactly the greatest selection for a team that wants to be considered amongst the contenders for the Super Bowl this year.
That’s where Cam Newton comes in.
Super Cam Newton to the rescue?
Newton has put up 32,382 passing yards to go along with 194 touchdowns through the air, whilst also having 5,628 rushing yards to go along with 75 touchdowns, the latter of which is the record for most rushing yards by a quarterback.
But his performances in recent years perhaps give an indicator as to why he is currently without a team, as the past two seasons saw him go a total of 7-13 in his 20 starts and throwing 12 touchdowns compared to 17 interceptions.
Desperate times though call for desperate measures, and Peter Schrager believes that Newton could be a solution for the Cowboys.
Cam Newton has at least one fan
Speaking on Good Morning Football (starting at 2:38), Schrager believed that Newton still remains the better option compared to what they have, and that he would also bring an element of entertainment to the side.

In fairness, whilst Newton might not be the same as he was during his MVP year, at least he has the experience to get things done, and has won at least a few games in recent seasons. And if the Cowboys need to just tread water in the next few weeks whilst they wait for Prescott to heal, then it might not be the worst option to go for.
