Liverpool 2-1 Ajax: Joel Matip scores dramatic late winner

Liverpool secured a priceless 2-1 victory over Ajax on Tuesday evening in the most dramatic way possible.

For a considerable amount of time, it looked as if Jurgen Klopp’s men would be frustrated and have to settle for a point in their second Champions League group stage encounter of the 2022/23 campaign.

Mohammed Kudus’ sensational first half goal levelled the scores at 1-1 after Mohamed Salah had opened the scoring and Ajax held firm after their equaliser.

But just before the end of the regulation 90, Liverpool finally broke the visitors’ resistance and struck for a second time through Joel Matip to secure their first win in Europe this season.

The Cameroonian centre-half thumped a header towards goal from Kostas Tsimikas’ well-directed corner kick and even though it was cleared by an Ajax defender, the Goal Decision System kicked in and declared that the ball had indeed crossed the line.

To say the home fans inside Anfield went crazy after the referee pointed to his watch would be a serious understatement…

Absolute scenes on Merseyside!

What a big moment that could be in Liverpool’s 2022/23 season, especially given the fact it came less than a week after the team were humbled 4-1 by Napoli away from home – a performance which saw them criticised from all angles.

Matip’s dramatic late winner against Ajax was actually his first goal in Champions League action since December of 2013, when he scored in a 2-0 group stage win for Schalke over FC Basel.

He was certainly overdue one in Europe’s top-tier competition, to say the least…

Liverpool will now not play a competitive match for quite some time after their outing against Chelsea on the weekend was postponed.

The Reds’ next game is against Brighton in the Premier League at Anfield on October 1st, before they host Rangers in the Champions League three days later.

Liverpool will go into those games fresh and with Thiago Alcantara – who was mesmerising against Ajax – back fully fit, they’ll expect to record back-to-back victories after the international break.
