Chelsea: £42m star will 'figure highly' on Potter's list at Stamford Bridge

Chelsea's Potter coaching.

Chelsea will be looking to sign Brighton & Hove Albion star Moises Caicedo in the coming transfer windows if Graham Potter looks to bolster his midfield at Stamford Bridge, according to journalist Pete O’Rourke.

Potter took over as Blues manager when Thomas Tuchel was sacked following the culmination of the summer window, meaning the former Seagulls’ boss is yet to make his mark on the side.

What is the latest on Caicedo?

Brighton signed the 20-year-old from Ecuadorian side Independiente del Valle for just £4.5 million on deadline day in the 2021 winter window, penning a three-and-a-half-year deal at the Amex.

But he has quickly risen to become one of the Premier League’s most promising midfield talents, with Liverpool and Manchester United both linked with his services over the summer.

Jurgen Klopp and co. were plotting a late £42 million move for Caicedo after being hit by an injury crisis in midfield, according to the Sun, but a move never came to fruition.

However, the player has admitted that he could be open to reuniting with Potter in west London, calling the Blues one of the ‘best teams in the world’ in an interview with Ole.

Caicedo added that ‘nobody’ would turn down an offer from Chelsea, describing the potential move as a ‘dream’ for him.

What has O’Rourke said on a potential swoop?

O’Rourke believes that, if Potter intends to strengthen his midfield options, Caicedo will inevitably be high on Chelsea’s wishlist.

The journalist adds that the manager’s connection with the 23-cap Ecuador international means he will have an added insight into what he could bring.

O’Rourke told GIVEMESPORT: “I’m sure if Chelsea are looking to bring in a midfielder in the next couple of transfer windows Moises Caicedo will be somebody who will figure highly on their wanted list due to his association with Graham Potter. He knows all about Caicedo, he knows what he can offer to the team as well.”

Do Chelsea need another midfielder?

Perhaps not immediately. Potter currently has Jorginho, N’Golo Kante, Mateo Kovacic, Conor Gallagher, Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Denis Zakaria to choose from.

However, two of their most prominent options, in Kante and Jorginho, have now entered the final 12 months of their respective contracts at Stamford Bridge.

It would make sense for Potter to begin planning for the future and it is easy to see why Caicedo could be viewed as an option.
