The Sims 4: Game will be free to play from next month

Sims 5 Multiplayer

The Sims 4 is moving to a free-to-play model from October 18th, it has been confirmed by EA.

The base game will not cost players anything to download on any format, including PC.

The Sims 4 launched eight years ago on PC and will now be free on Mac, PS4, PS5, Xbox One and Xbox Series S/X, plus the original computer systems.

Of course, plenty of players have already bought the base game and they will be gifted an upcoming cosmetic set titled the Desert Luxe Kit.

That will come with a number of furniture items inspired by the desert.

The game currently costs £17.99 or $19.99 to buy but it will be dropped to absolutely nothing from next month.

There is yet to be an announcement on price changes for the huge suite of DLC that has been released over the game’s lifespan.

The Sims 4, per Eurogamer, has received 12 Expansion Packs, 12 Game Packs, 18 Stuff Packs, and 15 Kit Packs.

Those tend to make the game feel complete but it does not appear that they will be free, meaning new players will still need to buy them if they opt to take advantage of The Sims 4’s base game being free.

EA has also committed to continuing to support the game, saying they will “continue to develop and release packs, kits and Sims Delivery Express drops into the foreseeable future.”

Sims 5

The developers have confirmed, too, that they have made changes to the EA Play Edition, adding the Get To Work Expansion Pack to it, while the EA Play Pro Edition will have the Toddler Stuff Pack too.

These announcements point to the fact that EA sees some real longevity in The Sims 4, so there is unlikely to be a Sims 5 on the horizon any time soon.

It is an interesting decision, and it may be seen as a way to bring new players into The Sims, even if the game has been out for a number of years.

We’ll keep you updated if we hear any more information about the prospect of new Packs or new Expansions, but we don’t expect any information about The Sims 5 just yet!
