Chelsea boss Graham Potter could add some 'unexpected names' to his Stamford Bridge squad after Kyle Macaulay joined him in making the move from Brighton & Hove Albion, according to journalist Dean Jones.

Potter was appointed as the Blues' head coach last week, just 24 hours after predecessor Thomas Tuchel was sacked by the west Londoners' hierarchy.

Brighton confirmed that assistant head of recruitment Macaulay had left the club following Potter's departure for Chelsea, along with assistant Billy Reid, first-team coaches Bjorn Hamberg and Bruno and goalkeeping coach Ben Roberts.

He has now been handed a recruitment role at Stamford Bridge and will act as a conduit between that area and the coaching staff.

Macaulay has worked with Potter for more than a decade, having joined him at Swedish outfit Ostersunds in 2012 and followed in his footsteps to Championship side Swansea City.

The Scotsman played a role in Brighton signing Marc Cucurella from Getafe last year and the left-back went on to join Chelsea for a fee which could rise to £62million during the recently closed transfer window.

Potter's tenure in the Blues' dugout got underway with a 1-1 Champions League group stage draw against Austrian side Red Bull Salzburg on Wednesday.

What has Dean Jones said about Macaulay?

Jones believes Chelsea owner Todd Boehly, who completed a £4.25billion takeover in May, would have benefited from having Macaulay working behind the scenes during the summer.

The journalist feels Macaulay, 36, will target stars who were not previously on the west Londoners' radar when the transfer window reopens in January.

Jones told GIVEMESPORT: "Chelsea could have probably done with a bit more guidance in that area over the summer.

"If Potter's going to have success with Chelsea, then they could probably do with somebody that can help them make signings that are a little bit more unexpected than some of the names that they were looking at this summer."

It is understood that Boehly is looking to secure a new sporting director ahead of the upcoming World Cup in Qatar and Potter will have a say on who gets the job.

Luis Campos, who currently works behind the scenes at Paris Saint-Germain, has reportedly been offered a contract worth just shy of £7million-per-year to take on the role immediately.

Salzburg's Christoph Freund has also refused to rule out the prospect of joining Chelsea after emerging as a candidate.
