Goldeneye 007’s remaster has been confirmed but so too has the fact that the game will have no online multiplayer on Xbox consoles.
The game has been announced for Microsoft’s consoles, as well as Nintendo Switch.
The new version of the classic FPS from the late 1990s will be added to Xbox Game Pass on day one, leading to plenty of excitement around the new release.
However, we have now had confirmation that the title will not receive any online multiplayer on Xbox.
It is a surprising decision, and it appears to have originated with True Achievements, who approached Microsoft for a comment.
Goldeneye 007 Online Play
The announcement that Goldeneye was coming back in the near future was greeted with an immense amount of excitement, as the game remains one of the most iconic shooters ever.
It has influenced hundreds of FPS games since and was originally released in 1997 for the Nintendo 64.
That has led to a convoluted situation in which the two remasters of the game – one for Switch and one for Xbox consoles – are actually different.
A Microsoft spokesperson told True Achievements: “Xbox is excited to bring GoldenEye 007 to Xbox Game Pass for the very first time – a faithful recreation of a much-loved and iconic title.
“While there are no plans to include online multiplayer as part of GoldenEye 007 on Xbox Game Pass, Xbox is focused on bringing this title to players in the way they fondly remember, including local multiplayer mode, allowing up to four players to take to the couch in a battle of wits and skill.”
The Nintendo Switch version of the game appears to be a port of the N64 version, which does include online play and will allow players to battle their mates in different houses.
However, the Xbox version does not, suggesting it is not a straight port. It will have achievements and 4K resolution but the only multiplayer will be the classic split-screen mode that was featured in the 1997 release.
That means you will need to be in the same room as anyone you want to play against, likely on the same couch.
That will be disappointing for a number of players who wanted to dive back into one of the most iconic games of all time and take on all-comers.
We’ll keep you updated if any more information about the remaster is revealed in the coming months.
