Lionel Messi: Maccabi Haifa player couldn't wait to put on PSG star's shirt

Lionel Messi was on the scoresheet for Paris Saint-Germain in the team’s 3-1 victory over Maccabi Haifa in the Champions League on Wednesday evening.

The Ligue 1 champions travelled to Israel for their second group stage match of the season and came away with three crucial points.

PSG actually fell 1-0 behind early on at the Sammy Ofer Stadium thanks to a strike from Tjaronn Chery, who you may remember played for Queens Park Rangers between 2015 and 2017.

The visitors managed to draw level before the half-time break through Messi and the Argentine assisted Kylian Mbappe after the interval to put his side 2-1 ahead.

Neymar, who’s in the form of his life right now, then made sure of victory for PSG in the 88th minute of proceedings with his 11th goal of the 2022/23 season thus far.

All in all, it was a solid night’s work by Christophe Galtier’s side and the superstar front three really are firing on all cylinders.

Messi looks back somewhere close to his mesmeric best, which for football lovers is a truly wonderful sight.

The 35-year-old received quite a reception from the mascots before kick-off in Haifa and his popularity in the sporting sphere was further highlighted at full-time.

After the referee had blown the whistle to signal the end of the match, Messi swapped shirts with Omer Atzili on the pitch.

And the Maccabi Haifa man simply couldn’t wait to show off his priceless souvenir from the seven-time Ballon d’Or winner.

Instead of waiting until he either got into the dressing room or arrived back at home, Atzili decided to wear the famous jersey on the pitch, despite the fact his team had just suffered a 3-1 defeat.

You certainly don’t see that very often in the Champions League…

Fair play, Omer. If we were lucky enough to receive a match-worn shirt from Messi, we’d want the world to know about it as well.

Atzili made his intentions clear with regards to getting Messi’s shirt way back in August.

After the Champions League draw was officially completed, the forward uploaded an Instagram story in which he and a teammate asked for the Argentine and Neymar’s jerseys.
