Nate Diaz vs Tony Ferguson was a memorable weekend for more reasons than one.

As always with the powers of social media, whether it be Twitter, Instagram or Reddit, fans are noticing things on the night of an event that would typically go under the radar.

The watchful eyes of the UFC fans have recently noticed something that happened once Diaz had submitted Ferguson at UFC 279 last weekend.

Ferguson’s involvement was very spontaneous after Khamzat Chimaev missed weight for his main event against Diaz. The latter finished his UFC contract in a matchup against Ferguson instead, which went down a treat with fans in attendance and millions watching around the world.

Millions tuned in to watch the two infamous UFC fighters go toe to toe in the Octagon, but there is one moment on people’s lips more so than other moments, and it’s nothing to do with the action on the night.

The clip that has emerged on social media has been described as a Reddit user’s “absolute favourite part of 279.”

As the referee was about to crown Diaz the winner, the defeated Ferguson handed the winner a Monster Energy can.

In true Diaz fashion, he characteristically was unphased by the potential promotion and threw the can over the side of the Octagon.

Monster Energy are the “Official Energy Drink of UFC” and so it is not abnormal to see competitors interacting with the brand whether that is post-fight or before they fight.

Despite his failure on the night, Ferguson reacted to Diaz’s five seconds of outburst with hysterical joy on his face. The two continued to show the utmost respect for each other.

This is not the first time that Diaz has been involved in a scrap involving a Monster Energy can as a memorable moment from the UFC 202 press conference still emerges on the internet from time to time.

Nate Diaz's future away from UFC

With Diaz’s contract up for consideration, the fighter has toyed with the possibility of him becoming a boxer.

If he does move on to pastures new, what a career he has had in the UFC.

He has always been a huge character within the sport and will be sorely missed, even by his rivals.
