Jimmy Garoppolo showed no signs of rust as he stepped off the bench to throw a touchdown for the San Francisco 49ers.

Having spent all offseason wondering what to do with their quarterbacks Trey Lance and Jimmy Garoppolo, the San Francisco 49ers decided to go with the former as their starter, even though he is still rather raw in the league and didn’t exactly light things up last season in his brief appearances as a rookie.

The 49ers tried to groom Lance last season, giving him some minutes here and there, even allowing him to start two games, but he could only complete 57.7% of his passes, and despite some bad reports emerging about his play in training camp, he was handed the starting role heading into this season.

The 49ers have tried their best to try and get Garoppolo out of town and onto a team that was looking for a quarterback, but with all the likely spots filled, including Baker Mayfield with the Carolina Panthers and the Cleveland Browns staying put even after the news surrounding Deshaun Watson, there weren't any suitable options left and so instead they held onto him, restructuring his contract in the process.

However, Lance suffered an injury in the opening quarter of their first home game of the season against the division rival Seattle Seahawks and was carted off the field.

Jimmy Garoppolo to the rescue

It’s not how many people would have hoped or thought that the Jimmy G era would start again, but there wasn’t a lot of time for sympathy as they looked to bounce back from their Week 1 loss to the Chicago Bears.

And luckily Garoppolo was able to provide that bounce back as he stepped off the bench to throw a touchdown to Ross Dwelley to score the team’s first passing touchdown of the season.

It looks like the 49ers got lucky that nobody picked him up despite trying their best to trade him, because you have to wonder what sort of situation they’d be in if he wasn’t on the roster.

It is obviously far too early to start talking about how long Lance is going to be out for, but if Garoppolo can keep playing like this whilst he is out, then he can really showcase his talent which could help him no end come the end of the season, whether or not the 49ers give him another chance or if another team takes a look at him and brings him on board.
