Teenager Linda Fruhvirtova became the youngest player to be ranked inside the world’s top 100, after winning the Chennai Open. The Czech star secured her first WTA title courtesy of a three sets win over Poland’s Magda Linette. Fruhivrtova, who is just 17 years old, climbs to 74th in the ranks, having also qualified for the main draw of this year’s US Open 

Fruhvirtova ends Gauff’s run 

US teenager Coco Gauff long held the distinction of being the youngest player ranked inside the top 100. 

The 18-year-old stormed onto the scene back in 2019 –– reaching the fourth round when she was just 15. 

Since then, Gauff has remained an ever-present part of the top 100 and reached a career-high ranking of eighth earlier this month.

Having reached the final of this year’s French Open and the quarter-finals at Flushing Meadows, Gauff has all but secured her spot in the WTA Finals later this season. 

Gauff’s record as the youngest top 100 player was ended earlier this year by another Czech teenager in Linda Noskova, who is also 17 years old. 

Noskova rose to 87th in the world after reaching the semi-finals of the Prague Open, though she has now fallen back outside the top 100. 

However, Fruhvirtova has now taken over Gauff’s crown once again. 

How did Fruhvirtova win her first title? 

Fruhvirtova lost the first set against Linette in Sunday’s final and was 4-1 down in the decider, before recovering to claim a historic victory. 

Her win means she is the youngest singles champion since Gauff won in Parma last year and the Czech star admitted she was in shock after the match.

"I was feeling good in my game, and I knew that I could do a good result here, but it was much better than we all probably expected," she stressed. 

"I'm pretty much in shock. It feels amazing, and I feel like it's a great start for me to keep building on this."

Who is Fruhvirtova’s sister? 

While Linda looks set to be a future star, her sister, Brenda, is also a talented player. 

The 15-year-old is on a 25-match win streak in matches at the 25k level. 

This streak dates back to June and the Czech has dropped just two sets in that time. 

Brenda made her WTA Tour debut at just 14 earlier this year when she competed at the Abierto Akron Zapopan. 

She is the youngest player to compete on the Tour since Madison Keys in 2009.
