Tottenham could land major boost over 'unbelievable talent' at Hotspur Way

Tottenham Hotspur manager Antonio Conte

Former Tottenham Hotspur winger Marcus Edwards is an ‘unbelievable talent’, according to journalist Dean Jones.

The 23-year-old shone for Sporting CP against his former employers in the Champions League prior to the international break and he could yet pocket Spurs a significant fee.

What is the latest news involving Edwards?

Edwards moved to Portuguese outfit Vitoria Guimaraes back in September 2019 on a free transfer, although the Tottenham hierarchy included a 50 percent sell-on clause into the deal.

And when the former England Under-20 international sealed his switch to Sporting in January, Spurs negotiated for that clause to be transferred over into his new contract.

Edwards’ existing deal at the Estádio José Alvalade also includes a £52 million release clause, meaning Tottenham could receive half that tally if a potential suitor pays that in full.

The capital club’s handling of Edwards’ situation could prove to be a masterstroke if they end up pocketing £26m for a player who left in 2019 after making just one senior appearance.

Only time will tell if the creative talent ends up improving Tottenham’s finances, but if he continues to develop at his current rate, then it surely won’t be long until he takes the next step in his career.

What has Jones said about Edwards?

Jones believes that the ‘big challenge’ for Edwards over the coming years is ‘career management’ and that his talent has been well known for some time within certain circles.

In an interview with GiveMeSport, he said: “He’s an unbelievable talent. And anyone who’s seen him has known that for years, to be honest.

“I remember years back being at Spurs’ training ground, and people were talking about him in glowing terms then, but it’s all about career management for him. And that’s the big challenge.”

How good is Edwards?

Edwards excelled throughout his two-and-a-half-year spell with Guimaraes, registering 20 goals and 14 assists in 96 appearances, catching the eye of Sporting chiefs.

Since making the move to the Primeira Liga giants, the 5 foot 6 gem has continued to impress, finding the back of the net on seven occasions in 24 outings, setting up a further six strikes.

As per WhoScored, Edwards has also averaged two key passes, 1.3 dribbles, and 1.1 crosses per league game this season, placing him in the top four amongst his teammates for each metric.

If he continues to develop at his current rate, then Edwards may well be snapped up in the summer, landing Tottenham a significant payday.
