Leeds: 'Incredible' £35m star 'Orta's top target' at Elland Road

Leeds United boss Jesse Marsch

Leeds United would ‘like to remain up to date’ with the situation of PSV Eindhoven winger Cody Gakpo, according to journalist Dean Jones.

The 23-year-old was on the radar of several Premier League clubs over the summer following an outstanding 2021/22 campaign but ended up staying put at the Philips Stadion.

What is the latest news involving Gakpo?

Manchester United were believed to be interested in snapping up Gakpo as they looked to improve their attacking options before opting to sign Antony from Ajax instead.

Transfer guru Fabrizio Romano then revealed that both Leeds and Southampton entered the race for the Netherlands international’s signature towards the end of the transfer window.

Romano stated that Leeds had agreed personal terms with Gakpo and offered more than the Saints but were ultimately unable to agree a fee with PSV for their prized asset.

However, it’s believed that the west Yorkshire outfit are ‘determined’ to try again for the clinical attacker when the transfer window opens back up again in January.

Sky Sports stated that PSV value Gakpo at around £35 million, a figure that would make him Leeds’ record signing and could act as a statement of intent for Jesse Marsch and Victor Orta.

What has Jones said about Gakpo?

Netherlands manager Louis van Gaal supposedly advised Gakpo to stay with his boyhood club ahead of the World Cup which kicks off in November.

But Jones believes that the 6 foot 2 ace remains one of Leeds’ ‘top targets’ with a January move potentially on the cards.

He told GiveMeSport: “I’m not sure talks are happening right now, but it’s a situation they would like to remain up to date with as he is one of their top targets, I believe.”

Do Leeds need Gakpo?

Leeds lost attacking talisman Raphinha to Barcelona over the summer, replacing him with Luis Sinisterra from Feyenoord.

But fellow winger Dan James then sealed a surprise last-minute season-long loan move to newly-promoted Fulham, leaving Marsch short of options out wide.

Do you know this obscure player Leeds signed in the January transfer window?

Therefore, Gakpo, who is comfortable on his favoured left-wing or upfront, could fill the void left behind, providing Leeds with a plethora of quality attacking possibilities.

The youngster has already racked up 19 goal contributions in his opening 13 appearances of the campaign, leading to him being labelled “incredible” and highlighting the talent he would bring to this Leeds setup.
