Everton should be ‘doing everything they can’ to convince winger Anthony Gordon to remain at the club long-term, according to journalist Paul Brown.

The highly-rated 21-year-old was heavily linked with a move away from Goodison Park over the summer following a breakout campaign in 2021/22 before he ultimately ended up staying put.

What is the latest news involving Gordon?

Last month, The Athletic reported that Gordon had informed Everton manager Frank Lampard that he wished to depart his boyhood club and sign for Chelsea ahead of September’s deadline.

Sky Sports then claimed that the Toffees rejected the capital club’s opening offer of between £40 million and £45m for Gordon as they were are determined not to lose any more of their top players.

A new contract offer was also believed to be on the table for the England Under-21 international while Lampard then ruled out his departure on the eve of deadline day as it was ‘too late’ in the window.

“Anthony is too important a player,” said the 44-year-old tactician. “He has showed his worth in the last two games, it is too late. He is going to be special. In the bigger picture, he has an affiliation with the fans.”

Gordon’s current £10,000-per-week contract is due to expire in the summer of 2025, and everyone associated with Everton will surely be eager for him to put pen to paper on fresh terms.

What has Brown said about Gordon?

Brown believes that there is ‘still some doubt’ about where Gordon will be plying his trade in years to come, and that the club’s hierarchy should be looking to end that speculation.

In an exclusive interview with GiveMeSport, he said: “So, there is still some doubt about his long-term future.

“And I think Everton should be doing everything they can to convince him that they are the right club for him and that he should stick around for a bit longer.”

How well is Gordon playing this season?

Gordon has turned out 67 times across all competitions for Everton in his short career with Alan Shearer labelling him "fearless", and he has arguably been putting in his strongest displays this season.

The hard-working attacker has registered two crucial goals in his seven Premier League appearances, earning his side 1-1 draws against both Brentford and Leeds United.

As per WhoScored, Gordon has averaged 2.3 tackles, 2.6 shots and 0.9 key passes per top-flight fixture, placing him in the top four for each metric when compared to his teammates.

Tying Gordon down to fresh terms would be a big boost for Lampard, allowing Everton to continue their progress on the pitch under him.
