The Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Tom Brady need to get Rob Gronkowski out of retirement to help the team’s offense, Robert Griffin III has claimed.
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have had a good start to the season, starting 2-0 and picking up big wins against the Dallas Cowboys, not allowing them to score a touchdown all game, before turning around and beating the New Orleans Saints in a crucial divisional matchup.
However, despite getting off to a perfect start when it comes to the win column, on the personnel front, things arguably couldn’t be going much worse for them. Not only are they having to deal with some incredibly bad luck when it comes to injuries, but they will now have to face the Green Bay Packers this weekend without the services of star wide receiver Mike Evans following his suspension for fighting during the game with the Saints this past weekend.
The Buccaneers have gone some way to helping relieve some of the strain on offense by this morning signing former Dallas Cowboys and Buffalo Bills wide receiver Cole Beasley to the practice squad, although he is expected to make the move to the main roster soon.
But there is one man who the Buccaneers should be making a move for, and that’s Rob Gronkowski.
Rob Gronkowski to rescue Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers?
With 107 touchdowns and 10,675 receiving yards since entering the NFL in the 2010 Draft and a career that has seen him named First-team All-Pro four times and winning four Super Bowl titles (three with the Patriots and one with the Buccaneers), there aren’t many who played the position that have done it as well as he did, with all bar two of his career touchdowns being thrown by Tom Brady.
But whilst things might look OK on the surface for the Buccaneers, speaking on ESPN’s Get Up, former NFL quarterback Robert Griffin III claimed that the tight end spot is being underutilised right now by Brady and the Bucs.
“What this comes down to is Brady is missing his favourite target. The Bucs need to lure Rob Gronkowski out of retirement. Right now they’re 31st in the league with receiving yards to tight ends, last year they were 5th. They have a total of three catches for 20 yards from their tight ends.
“And Brady has constantly eaten teams alive down the middle of the field and right now he doesn’t have that threat. So I don’t think their wide receivers are the issue here. They have good talent in that wide receiver room and Cole Beasley coming in gives them more talent. They don’t have the tight end threat that Tom Brady needs.”
Gronkowski did retire this offseason, but there has been speculation that he would be back at some point, whether or not Tom Brady and the Buccaneers will be able to do that though, we’ll just have to wait and see.
