Everton's midfield three of Amadou Onana, Idrissa Gueye and Alex Iwobi look good together, says journalist Paul Brown.

The trio all started in the Toffees' 1-0 win against West Ham last weekend, and Brown likes what he saw from them during that encounter at Goodison Park.

How much did Onana, Gueye and Iwobi cost?

Everton's new-look midfield is not a cheap one. While Gueye only cost them £2m, Onana and Iwobi were quite expensive purchases.

Onana, who arrived at the Merseyside club from Lille during the summer transfer window, was bought for £33m.

As for Iwobi, he cost roughly the same. Back in 2019, Everton signed the Nigerian from Arsenal in a deal worth up to £34m.

It is a lot of money, but if Onana and Iwobi can continue to help Frank Lampard's side win more games, then supporters will not care.

What has Brown said about Onana, Gueye and Iwobi?

Brown has praised Onana, Gueye and Iwobi, telling GIVEMESPORT that Everton have needed a midfield like their current one for some time.

Speaking to GMS, the journalist said: "The midfield three did look good together. I thought Onana had a bit of an off game against West Ham. Some of his distribution was poor, but I think, as a three, they work quite well because they all have qualities that balance each other out. You have a cool head, the defensive powerhouse and a guy with incredible experience in Gueye - sitting, mopping up, making sure that the ball goes to the right areas.

"You have someone with a great engine who can get up and down the pitch, make tackles, get involved going forward and create stuff in Onana. And you have someone who is really good at closing down the passing channels, creating, playing little through balls for wingers and the strikers in Iwobi. I think those three have talents that work together, and it suddenly looks like quite a good mix in there, which is exactly what Everton have needed for quite a long time."

Should Lampard be satisfied with his midfield options?

Yes, Gueye especially. As Brown mentioned, the 32-year-old is obviously a player with a lot of experience.

This is now his second stint in the Premier League with Everton, while he has also racked up over 90 caps for Senegal.

As per FBref, Gueye has ranked in the 95th percentile for pressures and the 85th for tackles among midfielders over the last year, so it is easy to see what he brings to this Everton side.

Ultimately, with the likes of Gueye, Onana and Iwobi, Lampard can certainly be happy with the midfield options he has at his disposal.
