George Russell has revealed how much he has learned working alongside Lewis Hamilton this season at Mercedes.

Russell made the move to the reigning Formula 1 Constructors' champions at the start of the campaign and would have been hoping that he could have been fighting for titles right from the very off.

However, Mercedes have had a challenging year that has seen them usurped by Red Bull and Ferrari as having the fastest cars on the grid and that has meant Russell has not been able to get into the championship fight, and nor has his 7-time title winning team-mate.

A tough year, then, but still a positive one in many respects for Russell who has shown huge consistency this season to finish inside the top five at every race that he has finished, with him also able to learn and work with one of the all-time greats in Hamilton, and with a wider team that is seen as one of the best in the history of F1.

Indeed, that has not been lost on George, who credited Lewis and the experience of working with him as the reason behind him improving as a driver:

“Firstly, I feel so fortunate being team-mates with Lewis because it has given me such an opportunity to see his strengths and where I can learn from him and he is definitely very strong in certain areas,” said Russell.

“He is always very strong in low-speed corners and under braking, he has always been very strong and it has been interesting to see his approach to certain issues and how he goes about it.

“There is no doubt that I have probably widened that envelope of my driving skills by being his team-mate.

“There is not really a way to measure whether you are a better driver or not, there are so many factors that go into it.”

A positive season for George Russell

Russell can be proud of this season even if he does not win a race.

He has shown he is a very fast, consistent driver and he has competed well with Hamilton and the other drivers up at the sharp end of the field.

Many see George as a potential world champion in the future and if Mercedes can provide the equipment then there is no reason why he cannot deliver on that potential.

Next year, if they get it right, expect George to be stronger still.
