Cristiano Ronaldo and Didier Drogba are two of the biggest names in the football world, with the forwards both Premier League icons in their own right.

Back in 2010, the globe was captivated by the spectacle of the South African World Cup, offering up moments of pure brilliance, showcasing the incredible culture from the get go with the famous strike from Siphiwe Tshabalala followed by that iconic celebration.

The opening group game for Portugal in Group G saw them take on Ivory Coast, with Drogba and Ronaldo pitted against each other.

Despite two of the best attackers in the world at the time taking to the pitch, the game didn’t see either defence breeched.

Although the Portuguese ace did go agonisingly close from a scoring a serious Goal of the Tournament contender, both sides had to settle for a point to kick-off their campaigns.

Ronaldo’s nation advanced to the knockout stages after the stalemate thanks to another goalless draw with Brazil and then a win against North Korea, with Drogba and his teammates missing out on the knockout stages by a point.

Cristiano Ronaldo’s ridiculous effort

As mentioned, Ronaldo did come desperately close to breaking the deadlock in the tie, striking the ball from way over 30 yards following a signature chop to get the ball back onto his right foot.

He had Boubacar Barry beaten all ends up as he flew across his line in an attempt to get near the thunderbolt strike which looked destined for the top corner.

Unfortunately for the Portuguese faithful, the strike hit the post and denied Ronaldo for what surely would have seen him clinch Goal of the Tournament come the conclusion of the spectacle.
