Drew McIntyre is one of the biggest WWE Superstars today, and undoubtedly the most successful British wrestler of all time.

The former WWE Champion's wrestling career is one of redemption given he was released by Vince McMahon in 2014 after five years on the main roster.

McIntyre reinvited himself on the independent scene as well as with TNA before returning to WWE as a bigger and better wrestler with a hard-hitting, no-nonsense style.

Since then, he has won two WWE titles, the Raw Tag Titles and the 2020 Royal Rumble. He has headlined WrestleMania as well as the recent Clash at the Castle show in a losing effort to Roman Reigns.

He dreamed of being a footballer as well as a wrestler

Growing up in Glasgow, real-life Drew Galloway was a huge football fan, playing as a defender for youth club Prestwick Boys.

His dream was to play for Glasgow Rangers until he was 14 when he focused on his other dream of becoming a pro wrestler. He remains a huge fan of Rangers to this day.

He has a master’s degree

Drew began training to become a pro wrestler at 15 with his parents paying for his fees as long as he put equal focus on his academic studies.

He went on to earn a master’s degree in criminology from Glasgow Caledonian University.

He feuded with Sheamus before WWE

Drew and Sheamus can be described as wrestling soulmates such is their connection in the ring, as well as being close friends outside of it. Then known as Drew Galloway and Sheamus O’Shaunessy, the two fought on numerous occasions in Irish Whip Wrestling.

He made his WWE debut in 2007

McIntyre became a main roster fixture in 2009 but his debut came on Smackdown in 2007. He was accompanied to the ring by legendary English wrestler Dave Taylor and defeated Zack Ryder/Matt Cardona, who then wrestled as Brett Major.

He is one of only two men to win both of WWE’s Development Titles

After his Smackdown debut, McIntyre moved back to developmental in Florida Championship Wrestling. Here, he won the FCW Title in March 2009.

Eight years later, he captured the NXT title, joining Seth Rollins as the only men to win both titles in their career.

He lost to Seth Rollins in the inaugural NXT Title tournament

McIntyre’s initial WWE run was a major failure with him struggling to assert himself on the main roster despite being anointed "The Chosen One" by Vince McMahon.

This was crystallised when he lost to Seth Rollins in the tournament to crown the first ever NXT Champion despite being a main roster member fighting a developmental star.

He has won multiple independent promotions main titles

After being released from WWE in 2014, McIntyre reinvited himself on the independent scene, wrestling around the world.

This led to him winning titles with promotions like Evolve, Insane Championship Wrestling, WhatCulture Pro Wrestling, Danish Pro Wrestling and Scottish Wrestling Alliance.

His Claymore finisher was found by accident

The Claymore is one of the most devastating looking finishers in WWE but it was only found as a result of tight pants. McIntyre went for a big boot but slipped due to the lack of give in his pants leading to him falling as he hit his opponent. He thought it looked cool and kept it as his finisher.

He is the only man to win the TNA, NXT and WWE Championships

As well as smaller promotions, McIntyre wrestled in TNA, becoming one of their biggest stars and capturing the Impact World Title. Upon returning to WWE, he won the NXT Championship before jumping to the main roster, where he eventually beat Brock Lesnar at WrestleMania 36 for the WWE Title.

He is the only UK World Champion in WWE history

There has been countless WWE superstars from the UK, from British Bulldog and Dynamite Kid to William Regal and Wade Barrett. McIntyre, however, is the only one to ever win a World Title in WWE. A little bit of history for the Scottish Warrior.
