This weekend’s North London Derby is set to smash the Women’s Super League attendance record. Arsenal host Spurs at the Emirates on Saturday, with both sides unbeaten so far this season. Recent reports have claimed that 48,000 tickets have been sold for the match so far and with two days to go until the game, the 50,000 mark remains in sight.

What is the current WSL attendance record?

The current attendance record in the league stands at 38,262, which was set back in 2019 during another North London debut.

That match was played at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, with second-half goals from Kim Little and Vivianne Miedema helping the Gunners secure a 2-0 win.

Earlier this month, Arsenal Women’s head coach Jonas Eidevall described the demand for tickets as “incredible” and said he was excited to put on a show for fans.

“It’s been incredible to see the demand for tickets for the North London Derby,” he said.

“You can really feel the excitement around the game at the moment so it’s amazing to see that translate into a record-breaking attendance – now it’s our job to repay that enthusiasm with a big performance in this crucial clash for our supporters.”

Women’s football attendances continuing to grow

Women’s football is continuing to grow at an unprecedented rate –– emphasised by the increasing size of crowds at matches.

England’s victory in the Euro 2022 final was watched by more than 80,000 fans at Wembley, while Barcelona twice broke the all-time women’s football attendance record at the Camp Nou last season.

This weekend’s North London derby will provide another super-sized crowd and comes at a crucial time.

A number of matches were due to be played at men’s stadiums in the opening week of this season, but all were postponed after the death of Queen Elizabeth II.

Indeed, Spurs vs Man United at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, Chelsea vs West Ham at Stamford Bridge and Brighton vs Aston VIlla at the Amex will now all have to be rescheduled.

Who will win the match?

Both sides started the new season with victories and will be keen to keep up the momentum.

The Gunners thrashed Brighton 4-0, while Spurs got the better of Leicester with a hard-fought 2-1 away win.

Arsenal will no doubt start the match as favourites, having finished second in the league last year and beaten Spurs 3-0 at the Emirates in May.

However, Tottenham were last season’s most improved side and were in contention for a Champions League spot for much of the season.

Saturday’s game, therefore, looks to be an enticing affair on paper and with 50,000 boisterous fans in attendance, this game is not one to be missed.
