Everton will "definitely" try to tie Anthony Gordon down to a new contract, says journalist Simon Phillips.

However, Phillips feels the winger's head has undoubtedly been turned by Chelsea following interest from the west London club during the summer transfer window.

What is the latest news involving Gordon?

According to the i, Everton have held talks with Gordon over a fresh deal, with those talks said to be "progressing well".

The above comes after Chelsea tried to sign the 21-year-old last month as they looked to strengthen out wide.

As per multiple outlets, including Sky Sports, the Blues made a bid worth around £45m for Gordon when the transfer window was still open.

Everton, however, were reluctant to do business and managed to keep hold of the Englishman in the end.

What has Phillips said about Gordon and Everton?

Phillips has told GIVEMESPORT that Gordon and Everton manager Frank Lampard held discussions about the attacker remaining at Goodison Park amid Chelsea's interest. And the journalist now thinks the Merseyside club will try to get him to put pen to paper on an extension.

Speaking to GMS, Phillips said: "He did have some conversations with Lampard and the two of them decided together that he would be staying. He's completely committed to the cause and committed to the team and there are no issues there for him.

"He wasn't going to aggressively push for that move, but his head has clearly been turned. Everton will definitely try and pin him down to a new deal."

How has Gordon performed this season?

It appears that Gordon, who is valued at £36m by Transfermarkt, has not allowed Chelsea's interest in him to be a distraction.

He has played in all seven of Everton's league games so far, so does indeed look fully committed, and has managed to score a couple of goals along the way.

Discussing his performance in the Toffees' 1-1 draw with Brentford last month, former Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy said on talkSPORT: "At a time when we jump on the negative and the attitude and the egos of the footballers, a young player to go out and perform like he did, not just the goal but he was at it again.

"His tenacity with and without the ball, his energy, his desire to win is there for all to see."

If Gordon can keep it up, while the likes of James Tarkowski and Conor Coady continue to perform at the back, with the duo both helping Everton to keep a clean sheet last time out, then Lampard's men should be in for a better season than the last one.
