Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin has made his thoughts clear on what he expects to happen between quarterbacks Mitch Trubiksy and Kenny Pickett.

The Pittsburgh Steelers fell to 1-2 last night following a loss on the road to the Cleveland Browns, in a game in which once again they struggled to really put on a show when it came to the offensive side of the ball under the stewardship of quarterback Mitch Trubisky.

Trubisky is being seen as the ‘safe’ option for the Steelers' offense this year as they look to transition away from franchise quarterback Ben Roethlisberger who retired this past offseason, rather than going with their rookie quarterback and 2022 1st round draft pick Kenny Pickett.

However, whilst Trubisky might be seen as safe, only throwing one interception so far this season, the one thing that he certainly hasn’t been is explosive, as he currently ranks 32nd out of 33 eligible quarterbacks in the NFL when it comes to yards per attempt at 5.5.

That trend continued against the Browns last night as he threw for just 207 yards, and didn’t throw a single touchdown as the Steelers fell 17-29 against their AFC North rivals.

Pittsburgh Steelers wasting Pickett's time?

As a result, it’s left a lot of people wondering whether or not the Steelers are right to carry on with Trubisky, or if they should move on to their rookie quarterback Pickett who during the preseason made a pretty convincing case that he could and perhaps should have been their starting quarterback:

And with the Steelers struggling the way they are offensively, it almost comes across as a case of ‘it can’t be much worse’, so they might as well put him in and see if he can be any better and at the very least get him some reps in real competition that will help aid his development moving forward.

But head coach Mike Tomlin has pretty much flat out refused to make a change at the position moving forward.

Pittsburgh Steelers staying put

Speaking after their loss to the Browns, Tomlin was unequivocal in his stance that Trubisky would still be the guy going forward, even with the team now having an extra few days in which they could start to blood Pickett into the system and get him ready for their game in Week 4 against the New York Jets:

There have been other factors discussed when it comes to the Steelers’ struggling offense, with ESPN broadcaster Stephen A. Smith talking about the offensive line not being up to scratch to protect whoever is behind them, whilst questions have also been raised regarding offensive coordinator Matt Canada.

So it isn’t just one thing that needs fixing with the Steelers, but the quarterback, whilst the biggest factor, is also the easiest to fix. Whether or not that plays into the decision-making moving forward though, we’ll just have to wait and see.
