Joe Joyce claimed the biggest scalp of his professional career when he defeated Joseph Parker the former WBO heavyweight champion on Saturday night.

It extended his record to 15-0 and gave him a 14th professional win by knockout.

He is trying to make up for lost time having turned professional late aged 31. The former Olympic silver medallist is now 37 years old and so is looking for a big name fight.

Following his latest win he has already called out Oleksandr Usyk for a title fight. Joyce currently sits as the number one challenger to Usyk in the WBO rankings but may have to wait for his time.

The top of the tree is crowded with Fury’s camp pushing for Anthony Joshua to sign a contract by Monday.

If that fight were to happen this year, then you would expect the winner to then face Usyk in a blockbuster unification fight, with all of the heavyweight belts on the line. Which leaves Joyce in need of an opponent.

Joyce may lack ring-craft and his movement is suspect, but for pure power punching there are few better. Parker went down hard and in spectacular fashion.

This was the third defeat of Parker’s career having lost to Anthony Joshua and Dillian Whyte in 2018 but both of those were by unanimous decision from the judges.

Joyce become the first man to knockout Parker and that is a real feather in his cap.

Joyce can throw a punch, but in this fight he also had to show he had a strong chin, a key trait in any boxer wanting to climb the ladder.

He took the best that Parker could throw at him and kept moving forwards, allowing him to get into range to land the knockout blow.

Joyce’s performance deserves a payday and promotor Frank Warren is moving heaven and earth to give the big Londoner just that.

Joe Joyce calls out Tyson Fury after Joseph Parker KO

Speaking to talkSPORT in the aftermath of the fight with regards to a potential fight with Tyson Fury, Joyce said:

“It was just a friendly hello. I’m not saying anything. I’m here and if he wants to fight me, let’s get it on.

“I like Joseph Parker, he did really well in there tonight. It was a fun fight and hope him and his family are all okay on their way back to New Zealand.

“I’ve got a lot of respect and love for the Furys, but I will fight Tyson. It’s a tough challenge, but I’m ready.”
