Newcastle United striker Callum Wilson is “doing everything” at Dursley Park to get himself match fit for Eddie Howe’s side, according to Sky Sports reporter Keith Downie.

The 30-year-old striker has missed the last five games through an injury sustained at the end of August.

What’s the latest on Wilson?

Wilson suffered a hamstring injury in Newcastle’s 3-3 Premier League draw with Manchester City at the end of August, and has been unable to feature for Howe’s side since.

The four-time England international was in contention to be in the matchday squad for the Tyneside club in their last Premier League fixture with Bournemouth, but the club opted to not risk him.

But the former Bournemouth man is expected to be in contention for the Magpies trip to Fulham on 1st October, with the striker telling the Footballer’s Football Podcast “Wilson’s back soon, you know!”

And Downie believes that Wilson is “strong minded enough” to be fully focused on returning to action as quickly as possible.

What has Downie said about Wilson?

He told GIVEMESPORT: “By all accounts Wilson's doing everything behind the scenes to get himself back involved as soon as he can.

“I mean he'll probably be looking at the England squad last week and seeing Ivan Toney getting called up and thinking, you know, if I kept myself fit and maybe scored a couple of goals, that could have been me.

“So, a difficult situation for him but he's been there and he's done it before and I think he's strong minded enough now that he’ll just kind of want to get back as soon as he can.”

Are Newcastle desperate for Wilson to return?

There’s no denying that Newcastle have looked a little blunt in attack following injuries to both Wilson and Allan Saint-Maximin, and Howe will no doubt be delighted to see the striker return to the side in the coming weeks.

Since the striker’s injury last month, Howe’s side have only been able to muster three Premier League goals, without winning a fixture as of yet.

Wilson has been an incredibly useful asset for the Magpies since his £20m signing from the Cherries in the summer of 2020, scoring 22 goals and providing five assists in 49 appearances in all competitions, according to Transfermarkt.

The 5 foot 11 forward has already scored two goals so far this season, earning himself an average SofaScore rating of 6.90 for his performances in the Premier League so far this campaign, suggesting that Howe’s side have missed his cutting edge in the attacking third of the pitch, despite the arrival of Alexander Isak for around £60m.

Wilson’s potential return is likely to provide Howe and the Newcastle side with a boost heading into their trip with Fulham, and they will hope that the striker’s return to the side will help the Magpies get some more Premier League wins on the board.
