John Cena's incredible streak within WWE is set to end in heartbreaking fashion later on this year.

Since his WWE main roster debut in 2002, Cena has wrestled a match every single year, but hasn't had one yet in 2022.

The former World Champion is not expected to return to WWE again this year, so his streak looks likely to be coming to an end.

John Cena's WWE streak is ending

Cena debuted on WWE's main roster as part of the SmackDown brand in 2002, and has wrestled at least one match every single year up until 2021.

His last match came as a dark match after the September 10 episode of SmackDown last year, when he teamed with Dominik and Rey Mysterio to beat Roman Reigns and The Usos.

Cena actually wrestled 16 times last year during his return to WWE over the summer, which featured a SummerSlam main event against Reigns, who was Universal Champion at the time.

However, Cena has not worked a match for WWE at any point this year, and seems unlikely to show up over the next three months to do so.

So, as pointed out by Fightful's Sean Ross Sapp, Cena's truly impressive WWE record is likely coming to an end this year, via WrestleTalk.

Cena started a career in Hollywood in 2017, with his hectic schedule meaning he had to become a part-time WWE Superstar in the process.

However, the 16-time WWE World Champion always ensured that he returned to WWE whenever his schedule allowed for it, such is his dedication to the industry.

Cena did return to WWE this year for an appearance on the June 27 episode of Raw, which Vince McMahon used to celebrate his 20-year career.

Many fans speculated that Cena's appearance would set up a match at SummerSlam the following month, potentially against Austin Theory, but that didn't end up happening.

Latest news on WWE's plans for John Cena

As noted, many WWE fans speculated that a match between Theory and Cena was being built to, potentially taking place over the summer.

However, reports from the Wrestling Observer suggest that WWE is planning on bringing Cena back for a match with the 2022 Money in the Bank winner at WrestleMania 39.

In fact, Cena's filming schedule has him free until May 2023, at least as things stand, meaning he's free to return to WWE for a match at the biggest show of the year.
